If you are considering traveling pregnant, you may be nervous about going too far from home. The truth is, the second trimester could be the perfect time to vacation or visit other destinations. This is a time when morning sickness may subside and you still have quite a bit of energy. Talk to your physician before you go and enjoy this magical time before you give birth. Use the following tips for traveling while pregnant, and make yourself as safe and comfortable as possible:

01. Choose destinations wisely. Choose domestic destinations when vacationing during a pregnancy. Many airlines prohibit international travel after the second trimester, so make sure you have a note from your doctor when you must get to your destination during this time. Bring a copy of your medical records in case of emergencies. Make sure you have all vaccines needed and that they are safe to receive in pregnancy.

02. Think before you book. The Second trimester is the best stage for traveling, as you are likely over morning sicknes

IUD
An IUD, or intrauterine device, is placed inside the woman’s uterus. IUD’s can remain effective for 5 to 10 years depending on the brand. IUDs make it harder for sperm to fertilize an egg, and they’re very effective. IUD’s are effective in preventing pregnancy from 99.9% to 98.9%.
Menstrual Cycle: What Every Young Woman Needs to Know

There are a number of ways women reference their menstrual cycle this day in age and each woman has their own individual feelings about it too. Even with the wealth of information out there about this particular time in your life a lot of women actually don’t know much about their reproductive cycle or what is happening in their body. The fact of the matter is, and as corny as it sounds, it really is a miraculous time in a young girl’s life. This is going touch on some of the basic info about your menstrual cycle but also cover some more in-depth issues and information you may not know.

PUBERTY AGE
Most girls will start their periods between the ages of 10 and 16. This is the stage of puberty when your body starts preparing itself to become pregnant (and yes, you can get pregnant before your first menstrual cycle). Even though this is the common age of young girls to start having their period it is not the “rule”. It is different for every girl and can fall far outside of the norm. Some young woman, especia

Spring Cleaning -Women’s Health for Spring and Summer

Although our good friend Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, it won’t be long before we feel the effects of spring. Gentle breezes, more daylight, and warm rays of sun are few reasons to be excited about the weather changes occurring. But did you know, a woman’s body experiences changes during seasonal changes as well? Learn how to you can take care of your body’s needs and avoid fads that might complicate a positive adjustment to seasonal changes.

SKIN CARE
As the seasons change, air temperature and moisture levels can impact your skin. Too much humidity can create an excess of oil and sweat causing blocked pores and acne. If the air is too dry, the skin will dry and become sensitive, cracked, or irritated. Maintaining the balance of moisture absorption in your skin can be helped with the right skin care regimen, such as cleansers, exfoliators, and moisturizers. Using a humidifier or dehumidifier in your home can also work to balance the air quality.

Importance of Visiting an OB/GYN Before Age 21

Many females are familiar with the routine yearly visit to their gynecologist, but for most, the annual exam did not begin until their mid-twenties. There are numerous reasons for encouraging women to keep their yearly gynecological exam, but these do not just apply to older women. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that female teens and young adults who have not yet reached their 21st birthday should follow a routine exam schedule as there are plenty of benefits from early attention to gynecological health. For mothers of teenage girls, it is helpful to know why these visits are necessary.

There are five primary reasons for females between the ages of 13-21 to visit an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB/GYN). Although the first visit may simply involve a talk covering family history, menstrual history, sexual activities, and what to expect during exams, future appointments will proactively address health, periods, sexuality and relationships, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted d

One of the breakout songs of 2015 highlighted the important of our image in society. When the Chainsmokers released “Let’s Take a Selfie,” a seemingly innocent craze suddenly identified just how much of our lives are consumed by what we look like, who we are with, how well we are doing, and how much we are liked.
Sure, it’s fun to snap photos with friends and capture crazy memories, but how much of our duck lips and #selfies are identifying reality. Be honest, why don’t we see more #diaperchange selfies. Perhaps because they aren’t the cool image people want to see or perhaps because they aren’t the ticket to being liked and popular. OMG. Maybe if I pull out the selfie stick we can get better rating on this post. #NOT This isn’t about me; it’s about you and what is dictating your drive for the “perfect body image”.
It’s no secret that our society promotes thinner is better. Blondes have more fun. Skimpy equals sexy. Buff and tan is the way to go. Designer clothes get you places. Even the car you drive- accord

Adenomyosis: What You Need to Know

Having an OB/GYN provider that you are comfortable with is the first step in ensuring your reproductive health. Being able to engage in conversations that might seem uncomfortable with a caring and supportive physician makes it easier to discuss the changes you are experiencing in your body. Starting with puberty, the female body experiences many changes over the course of time, and some of the monthly experiences with ovulation or your menstrual cycle can bring concerning side effects or discomforts.
Not knowing if the changes are normal might be alarming, but often women are embarrassed to talk about what they are experiencing. By being honest and open with your OB/GYN about the details of pains, discomfort, discharges, or flow of your cycle, your provider is able to help diagnosis conditions that are abnormal and causing harm to your uterus, cervix and reproductive organs. One such condition is adenomyosis.
Who is affected?
Often occurring in women over the age of 35 and who have had a least one child,

Understanding Exercise & Nutrition for Women

Did you know that men and women AREN’T the same when it comes to health and what our bodies need? Sure, the basics of a healthy diet and exercise are the same but there are certain things that are important for women to keep in mind that aren’t as essential to men’s’ health. Due to hormonal changes throughout our lives women have several nutritional needs that are often neglected due to not knowing how essential they are. Here are a few things for women to keep in mind when they are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

NUTRITION
CALCIUM
Calcium is a biggie! Have you ever had a female friend or relative who seemed to get shorter as they got older? That could be from a lack of calcium in their diet over the years and the onset of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition where your new bone development can’t keep up with bone breakdown. It is known to be more common in women than in men and risk increases with age.

Calcium is a huge contributor to healthy bones but it also helps regulate heart rhythm and

Many women find themselves seeking out the most recent diet fads, weight loss pills, and weight loss devices to get rid of unwanted, stubborn areas of body fat. Some even find themselves resorting to dangerous surgical procedures, such as liposuction, that can cause severe, lifelong health issues. If you have thought about resorting to these extremes, or considered going under the knife, make sure to do your research so you know what all of your options are and what the risks associated with each one is before making any decisions. With so many safe options available to help you lose that unwanted fat, surgery can often be removed from the equation. There are a few non-surgical techniques available and they all have their pros and cons. Here are a couple of those options and the good and bad of each.

“Fat Melting” Injections – In the last decade fat “dissolving” injections have been the subject of some positive, but much more negative, speculation. A few of the positives of fat dissolving injections are:

Managing PCOS with Diet and Exercise

Being diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a lifelong challenge, but with lifestyle changes, proactive medical involvement, and a supportive network of friends and family, your activity levels, dreams of kids and family, and career development are all still possible. While many with PCOS struggle with infertility, irregular periods, unwanted hair, and skin or acne changes, a lesser discussed association with PCOS is the psychological changes women undergo.

The working partnership between you and your OB/GYN will keep you on track as you adjust to your condition, but you must remember you are not alone in this. For the one in ten women that have been diagnosed with PCOS, the following guidelines for lifestyle changes and management have shown to be successful in keeping your body healthy and your mind sane.

What to do if Sex Hurts

When your partner has that look in their eye that tells you they’re in the mood and all you can think is “OUCH!”, there’s a problem. Pain during sex is actually more common than you might think and can usually be remedied pretty easily.

One of the main keys to fixing this problem is communication! Another key is knowing your body and what gets you in the mood. Here are a few things to think about and TALK about that can cause pain during sex and some ideas as to what you can do to from “Ouch!” to “Ahhhhhh!”.

DRYNESS
FOREPLAY
It takes a lot for us, women, to get turned on sometimes. Especially, in comparison to our male counterparts who can see our bra in the dirty clothes hamper and be ready to go. If you feel like a roll of sandpaper is going in your vagina you may need to ask your partner to spend a little more time getting you in the mood so it can be more pleasurable for you both.

LUBRICATION
It may be that you are in the mood and completely turned on but you just can’t seem to “make it happen”. Becaus

Understanding Female Depression & Treatments

Baby Blues, in a rut, feeling down. There are many terms we use to describe depression. There are also many causes and, luckily, many treatments for depression. The main thing to remember about depression that it is a medical condition and that you’re not alone.

UNDERSTANDING FEMALE DEPRESSION
First of all, don’t let anyone tell you that depression is something you should just snap out of. Depression is a medical condition.

The best way I can describe it is by using a “for instance”….imagine you have just been diagnosed with diabetes. You will need to keep your blood sugar levels in check with insulin and diet to stay healthy. You will work with your doctor on treatments and get help managing it.

Depression works on the same level. It’s a sign that something in your body isn’t working as it should.

A visit with your doctor is the best course of action to find out what is causing your depression and what your next step will be to feeling like yourself again.

Let’s look at a few reasons women find themselv

Dieting the Right Way for Your Body & Needs

We have all seen or heard commercials about how “YOU CAN LOSE 20 POUNDS, WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR DIET OR EXERCISING, THIS WEEKEND BY TAKE THIS PILL.”

(Insert eye roll here) Yeah, that’s realistic.

There are so many fad diets on the market you can’t even pass a magazine stand in the grocery store without seeing one of the “miracle diets”.

Yes, these may be appealing to women who are trying to lose weight but they are often unrealistic, dangerous, and, even if they do work, rarely are you able to keep the weight off. The best and most realistic way to lose weight and keep it off is through a lifestyle change that involves a balance diet and exercise.

DIETING
Most of us hate even hearing the word diet. It’s one of those 4 letter words that are only uttered under our breath when we look at the bathroom scale. The problem with dieting is that most of us have no idea where to start and we rarely think to consult our doctor before we begin trying to lose weight.

One of the best tips I can offer is to be patient.

A Busy Mom’s Guide to Diet & Exercise

As a mom, it’s difficult to find time to take a shower every day, much less time to go to the gym or plan out a healthy menu for you and your family. Between work, school, practices, appointments, and housework it’s often easier to reduce to drive-thru than to go home every night to make a healthy home cooked meal.

Surprisingly, staying healthy through diet and exercise is a lot easier than you think. There are a lot of ways to incorporate healthy choices into your daily life without it taking a lot of time out of your, already, busy schedule. Let me show you how.

QUICK & EASY WAYS TO EXERCISE
#1 WALKING
Each person has a different activity level. It wasn’t until I tracked my steps, with a pedometer, that I realized I’m actually not getting as much exercise as I thought I was in my daily life. Then that I started looking for ways to add more movement in my routine.

I have mentioned this tip before, but it is worth repeating. When you go somewhere don’t look for the closest parking spot you can find. If it

Let’s Talk About Sexual Dysfunction in Women

Let’s talk about sex ladies! (Collective gasp) Yes, I know, but let’s be honest, we all do it and it’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Many women feel great about their sex life. Then there’s the rest of us….

How many women are actually enjoying their sex lives?

I don’t mean the women who tolerate sex because they feel like it’s part of their “duties” as a woman. I’m talking about women who walk around with that big, goofy smile on their face for hours afterward.

You know the look I’m talking about. I know we’ve all been green with envy, at some point in time, of the person wearing it.

Many women feel great about their sex life. If it feels good mentally and physically, they feel closer to their partner, and they feel their sex life is very fulfilling.

Then there’s the rest of us. To us sex can be very unsatisfying and, beyond popular belief, that is not ok and needs to be talked about.

COMMON PROBLEMS INCLUDE:
01. Pain
02. Discomfort
03. Feeling unsatisfied with your performance. (Yes, that can

Pregnancy & the Zika Virus – What You Need to Know

If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, the Zika virus is probably a major concern for you now, especially now that we have had 23 confirmed cases in Tennessee at the time of writing this article. This virus is particularly devastating for pregnant women and their babies, so it’s important to understand how it’s spread and how to prevent infection.

WHAT IS THE ZIKA VIRUS?
The virus originated in South America and has spread through Brazil quickly. Thousands of babies suffered several birth defects when their mothers contracted the virus while they were pregnant. Brain damage and Guillain-Barre syndrome were among the defects reported.

Since then, it has now spread through more than 36 countries and territories in the Americas and has made its way to the United States and to our back door in Tennessee. There have been 168 cases in the Continental United States and 23 of those in Tennessee.

It’s important to note that the local cases of Zika were all travel-related and were not from live mosquitoes i

Spotting Between Periods: Should I Be Worried?

Having some spotting between periods is a source of worry for a lot of women. It can occur, but when should you be worried? There are a lot of reasons that this could be happening, some are more a cause for concern than others.

spotting between periods

On top of any medical questions that come up, it’s an inconvenience to worry about ruining clothes, wearing light pants, and planning your day around the chance that you might have some spotting. We’ll go into a little detail about things you should look out for when it comes to spotting between periods.

SHOULD YOU BE WORRIED SPOTTING BETWEEN PERIODS?
To start, let’s define a normal period. Periods generally last around seven days or less. There are typically about three to five weeks between those periods. The average period results in the loss of just under 3 ounces of blood. An abnormal period is one that lasts longer than seven days, occurs after a five-week timeframe or before a three-week one, or more than 3 ounces in blood loss.

How Often Should You Go to the Gynecologist?

If you’ve been wondering how often should you go to the gynecologist, the short answer is once a year. But, like anything else pertaining to medicine, this is a highly personal choice based on both your medical history and your current state of health.

No matter where you fall in the scheme of things, it’s important not to put off an annual exam based on fear. With the right doctor, it can be far less stressful than you might imagine. Let’s take a moment to run through what to expect in an annual exam and how often you should go.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN AN ANNUAL GYNECOLOGICAL EXAM
In an annual gynecological exam, your doctor is likely to perform, at a minimum, a pelvic exam and a pap smear. Depending on your age, he or she will also examine your breasts for any abnormalities or perform a mammogram. During a pelvic exam, your doctor will check for abnormalities in your cervix, uterus, ovaries, and bladder. Regarding your cervix, a pap smear will also be performed. This is a gentle swabbing of your cervix to test

You can add tiredness, heartburn, shortness of breath and spider veins to that list also!

Pregnancy comes with its challenges. For many women, the last three months of this journey are the most difficult.
